Planning for EVs

Planning for an EV future? Here’s what you need to know to make the transition as smooth as possible.

Electric vehicles (EVs) are not just the future; they’re the present.

A report from the Electric Vehicle Council of Australia shows nationally, there are roughly 130,000 EVs on the roads – a sharp increase from 44,000 EVs at the start of 2022.

That number is set to increase to 180,000 by the end of 2023.

With plenty of benefits for businesses, there’s never been a better time to embrace this sustainable mode of transport. Here’s how you can begin planning a future for an EV fleet.

EV Models in Australia

There are now 91 electric car, van and ute models available in Australia (Oct 2023).

Below is a breakdown of the top EV models sold in Australia up until June 2023.

Transitioning your fleet to EVs? It’s essential to choose the right model for your needs. Here’s a quick guide to get you on track:

1. Know Your Travel Needs:

Think about how far your vehicles travel daily. Some EVs are great for city drives, while others are built for longer distances.

2. Charging Up:

Different EVs need different chargers. Check what’s available near you and consider setting up chargers at your base.

3. Cost Matters:

EVs might cost more upfront, but they can save you money in the long run with lower fuel and maintenance costs. Don’t forget to look for government incentives!

4. Availability:

Some EV models are super popular and might have wait times. Plan ahead to make sure you get the vehicles you need, when you need them.

EV Charging Infrastructure Development

Charging infrastructure is a key consideration when switching your current fleet to EVs.

The good news is the Australian government has several initiatives in place to make Australia’s roads more EV-friendly.

The Driving The Nation Fund

The fund is set to turbocharge Australia’s journey to electric vehicles. Not only will it boost our national EV charging and hydrogen refuelling stations, but it’ll also back fleet investments.

The Australian Government ramped up its investment by $250 million in 2022, pushing the fund’s total to a solid $500 million

There are 3 elements to the Driving The Nation Fund:

  • National EV charging network: $39.3 million to help deliver 117 EV chargers on key highway routes across Australia
  • Hydrogen Highways: Up to $80 million co-invested with state and territory governments to help decarbonise heavy transport with a roll out of hydrogen refuelling networks on key freight routes
  • Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA): Over $130 million to co-fund initiatives that will reduce Australia’s road transport emissions.

National EV Charging Network

Under the Driving The Nation Fund, the government and NRMA are teaming up for a major EV boost. They’re setting up 117 charging stations on main highways, linking all capital cities and spaced about 150 kms apart. These fast chargers work for all EVs and can juice up 4 cars at once without slowing down. They’re also filling in charging gaps, with a focus on helping regional areas.

Hydrogen Highways

The Driving The Nation Fund is also paving the way for cleaner heavy transport. They’re partnering with states and territories to introduce Hydrogen Highways, putting up to $80 million on the table. This will fund hydrogen vehicles and refuelling stations on key freight paths.

ARENA Grants

ARENA’s pitching in with $130 million for cleaner roads. They’re focusing on projects that expand EV charging access, aiming to make it easy for everyone – whether you’re in a city flat or a country home. Their goal? A modern, user-friendly charging network across Australia.

EV Installation and Setup of Charging Stations

Considering adding an EV charging station to your business premises? Here’s a quick rundown to get you started.

Types of Charging & Associated Costs

The space you have available will most likely determine the best charging solution for you:

  • Level 2 AC Charging: This is a solid pick for most spaces, and it’ll set you back anywhere from $2,000 to $5,000.
  • Level 3 DC Charging (25kW): A faster option, but with a steeper price tag, ranging from $20,000 to $30,000.
  • Level 3 DC Charging (50kW): The top-tier fast charger, you’re looking at an investment of $50,000 to $80,000.

Remember, the final price tag isn’t just about the charger.

The closeness to your distribution boards, the state of your current electrical setup, and any needed upgrades can also influence the overall cost.

Thinking of making the leap?

It’s an excellent way to attract eco-conscious consumers and promote a greener brand image. Plus, with more Aussies jumping into EVs, it’s a forward-thinking move for any business.
